Abstract
Post-harvest loss constitutes a major threat to agriculture products, especially the perishable ones like fresh fishes. This study was conducted to assess types of loss incurred by artisanal fishermen as well as investigate determinants of post-harvest loss in the study area. A 2-stage sampling procedure was employed to select 140 artisanal fishers for interview. Primary data used were collected with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire and administered to 140 respondents out of which 120 were retrieved for analysis. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, simple percentage, mean, standard deviation and multiple linear regression model. The results revealed that artisanal fishing in the study area is mainly dominated by male fishers and are mostly married. The fishermen were in their active ages and had large household size. The common types losses incurred in the area are those due to poor storage, rot, lack of market and poor processing technique. Post-harvest loss in the area was increased by home to village market (p≤0.05) and home to neighboring town market distances (p≤0.05). Creation of effective markets close to the fishing site would reduce the travelling distance(s) and hence, less postharvest losses.
