Abstract
The study compared Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund guaranteed to agricultural sectors with emphasis on the fisheries sector in Nigeria. The specific objectives were to assess the volume of credit guaranteed to agricultural sectors and compare the difference in the volume of credit guaranteed to agricultural sectors. A secondary data from Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin from 1982-2014 were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. The result indicates that food crops sector received 69.93% of total share of credit guaranteed to the agricultural sector, livestock was 16.22%, fisheries was 4.45%, cash crops were 2.44%, mixed farming was 4.11% and other sectors were 2.85%. The F (5, 192) =13.4, p<0.01 which indicates that there was a significant difference in Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund allocations between and within sectors. However, there were no significant differences (p<0.05) among the value of ACGSF credit guaranteed to fisheries, cash crops, livestock, mixed farming and other sectors. While, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the value of Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund credit guaranteed to food crops and other sectors (fisheries, cash crops, livestock, mixed farming and other sectors). The disparity in credit guarantees to the fisheries sector relative to other sectors could have a negative influence on the performance of the fisheries sector in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that there should be an increase in credit guarantees through the scheme to those sectors that were underfunded with more emphasis on the fisheries sector.
