Abstract

This study investigated the replacement of fishmeal with processed African catfish offal meal in the diet of Clarias gariepinus. Clariid offal was subjected to a temperature of 50oC for 10hrs, sundried, milled and designated as OFM. Five 40% crude protein diets were formulated using OFM to replace fishmeal at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% (designated as diets I, II, III, IV, and V respectively). Diets were fed to triplicate groups of randomly stocked C. gariepinus (25±0.02g weigh and 18±0.5cm standard length) at 5% of their body weight given in two instalments (7.30-8.00hrs and 17.30-18.00hrs) daily for 84 days. Results showed that mean weight gain was higher (54.57±0.34g) in juvenile fed OFM II and least (13.06±0.67g) in fish fed treatment OFM V. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the MWG values of the fish fed the control diet (OFM I) and the fish fed treatment OFM II. Feed conversion ratio were   2.49, 2.44 and 2.63 for the treatments OFM I, OFM II and OFM III, respectively, indicating no statistically significant variation (P>0.05) among them. Parked cell volume was higher in the control diet (29.68%) and least in OFM IV (20.33%), while haemoglobin values ranged from 7.85g/100L in 75% OFM to 9.71g/100L in 0 % OFM. Increased OFM inclusion resulted in significant increase in serum albumin of experimental fish. This study revealed that African catfish (Clariid) offal meal can replace between 20 to 40% of fish meal in the diet of Clarias gariepinus juveniles.
