Abstract

Effects of sub-lethal concentrations of bentazon on the growth and some haematological indices on juveniles of Clarias gariepinus under laboratory conditions was investigated. Clarias gariepinus juveniles (mean weight 24.56 ± 9.86g SD; mean length 16.06 ± 2.33cm SD) were exposed to bentazon (0.20, 0.40 and 0.80mg-1) and 0.00mg-1 (control) for 56 days. Fulton’s condition was assessed at the beginning and the end of the experiment. The result shows that there was a significant (P<0.05) variation in the mean weight gain and specific growth rate to increase in the bentazon concentration and period of the exposed groups of fish compared to the control. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) and gross feed conversion efficiency were significantly (P<0.05) higher (1.36 and 78.2) compared to those groups of fish exposed to the. The protein efficiency has the highest value of 27.01 in the control (0.00mg-1) and 25.50 with the highest concentration of bentazon and were said to be non-significantly different. The haematological responses to the bentazon exposure were very variable relative to the exposed concentrations. However, there was a decline in the (PCV), (RBC) and (Hb) values in the exposed groups of fishes (0.20, 0.40 and 0.80mg-1) compared to their control (0.00mg-1). These parameters have the highest values in the control (41.00%, 277.00x106mm3 and 12.00) respectively, and lowest in the highest concentration of toxicant (28.00%, 157.00x106mm3 and 18.00). There is a reverse corresponding increase in the white blood cell (WBC) values with an increase in the concentration compared to their control values. The highest concentration (0.80mg-1) has the highest value of 34,816x500mm3 whereas the least value 23,173x500mm3 in the control. There was significant (P<0.05) difference between the control group and the exposed groups of fishes. Results from this study indicate that exposure to sub-lethal levels of bentazon impacted on the growth parameters and blood variables of the exposed fish.
